Meet the Author
David Kaemmerer is the author of The Purgatory Journals, an action-packed Urban Fantasy series that blends contemporary fantasy, LitRPG progression, epic mythology, and Isekai-inspired adventure into a unique reading experience. His stories throw ordinary people into extraordinary worlds where ancient gods, monsters, and impossible choices collide, and where every victory comes at a price.
Known for fast-paced action, memorable characters, and immersive world-building, David enjoys creating stories that balance humor, heart, and high stakes. His novels combine modern settings with sprawling fantasy adventures, giving readers the excitement of epic quests while keeping the characters grounded and relatable. Whether battling Chaos Gods, exploring mysterious realms, or uncovering ancient secrets, his heroes are constantly forced to grow through impossible challenges.
David lives in the St. Louis, Missouri area with his wife, two dogs, four mules, and three cats. His lifelong love of history, fantasy, and adventure has shaped nearly every aspect of his writing.
For more than 35 years, David has practiced mounted and ground medieval martial arts and jousting, remaining both a dedicated student and instructor of historical combat. When he's not writing, you'll often find him trail riding, driving mule wagons, camping, competing in medieval tournaments, or diving into an intense WWII scenario paintball event.
An avid fan of steampunk, archery, and competitive defensive handgun shooting, David has always been drawn to hobbies that combine skill, strategy, and storytelling. He's also an unapologetic gaming enthusiast who enjoys everything from tabletop role-playing games and board games to PC, console, and VR adventures.
David's passion for fantasy began early. He grew up devouring science fiction, fantasy, horror, and medieval history, and discovered Dungeons & Dragons at the age of nine. More than three decades later, he still serves as Game Master for many of the same friends who gathered around the table with him as kids—a tradition that continues to inspire many of the characters, adventures, and ideas found in his novels.
Much of David's fiction draws from his own experiences. His years of studying martial arts, working with horses and mules, exploring the outdoors, and running tabletop RPG campaigns all help create worlds that feel authentic, lived-in, and full of adventure.
Outside of fiction, David is also well known in the mule community. A passionate mule owner, trainer, competitor, and educator, he has written numerous articles for mule publications and blogs and served for several years as a staff writer for Mules and More Magazine. His love of these remarkable animals eventually inspired the creation of MuleKnight.com, where he shares his knowledge, experiences, and appreciation for one of the world's most misunderstood working partners.
Whether he's writing novels, designing role-playing games, teaching medieval combat, or talking about mules, David's greatest passion has always been the same: telling stories that inspire people to embrace adventure.
